February 12-21, 2027
in Mindo, Ecuador
in the heart of the UNESCO Choco Andino Biosphere Reserve
You are in a cloud forest paradise.
In front of you, mossy rock surrounds a deep clear pool fed by a tumbling waterfall.
You feel the mist on your face, stand under waxy leaves the size of large umbrellas, and watch a trio of blue and orange butterflies flit from branch to branch.
Sounds permeate the moist air: the rush of the water, the laughter of new friends, and the songs of hundreds of birds…
Some of their names (the Crimson-rumped Toucanet, the Black-eared Fairy, the Long-wattled Umbrellabird) are enough to entice your creative urges but right now you aren’t writing…
Instead, you are living. All of your senses absorbing this moment in this incredible place.
Will you swim?
Sink into the brisk, refreshing water to cool yourself after the hike through the humid forest?

Perhaps.
You breathe deeply, capturing the heady mix of scent: rich loam, rain, the citrus-scented Monkey Orchid, resins from trees traditionally used to make incense…
Opening your eyes, you watch the swimmers emerge into the cool green light of the clearing. They laugh, invigorated and refreshed, and one points upward into the lush canopy.
You follow their gaze to a bird dressed in a patchwork of brilliant red, gold, and slate. Its call rises above the chorus, a strange, rhythmic honking that makes you smile.
Your fingers itch for a pen. You long to scribble down every detail of this vibrant collage… and you feel a rush of deep satisfaction knowing you will be able to sink into your words soon, during the next daily writing circle.
This heady inspiration is exactly what you have needed to break you out of your comfort zone, to help you remember the pleasure of creating with words. The courage of stepping out of your everyday life into this adventure will nourish you for years to come…
You decide to take the plunge…
As you step into the cool green pool to the cheers of the other writers, you find yourself grinning so widely that your cheeks ache and tears of an unbridled joy blur the surroundings to a rich, kaleidoscopic palate of green…
If this isn’t paradise, what is?

Praise for Lauren and Anita’s Still Water retreat:
I’ve been to a variety of writing retreats across Canada, in Scotland and Ireland, and Still Water was one of the loveliest. Lauren and Anita built in quiet time to reflect, rest, read, or write, and the peace and creative spaces were a welcome respite from the demands of everyday life. I also really loved meeting other women writers. The way in which Lauren and Anita created rapport and community was impressive. I’d love to come again!
This experience is for me...
Our Home in the Cloud Forest
Dracula orchids with their ghostly faces, the lobster-claw blooms of heliconias, and the glitter of hummingbirds will greet you at our refuge in the heart of the UNESCO Choco Andino Biosphere Reserve.
Resembling a wilderness lodge, the Refugio del Rio Retreat Centre is comprised of wooden buildings with unique creative touches.
The rooms glow with natural warmth and each offers large windows to let in the light, sight, sounds, and smells of the cloud forest along with decorative touches of local culture like Ecuadorian tapestries. Both single and shared accommodations are available, all with ensuite baths with showers.

In your comfortable bed, you will fall asleep to the rush of the Canchupi River through the property and wake to calls of toucans, the unique Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, or other members of the 450-plus species of birds that call this place home.
Close enough to Mindo to explore the village on foot, yet tucked into its own private nature reserve, the centre has many spots for writing: tables overlooking the river, balconies that feel like tree houses, and hammocks for drifting into the dream world of your imagination.
When you put down the pen, take a refreshing dip in the river, stretch out in the open air yoga studio, read in a hammock or stroll into the village to browse the unique shops of this ecotourism hub.
There, you might opt to sit for awhile in a cafe, people-watching or scribbling some more with a cup of locally-grown coffee or chocolate caliente, often served with cubes of queso fresco (fresh cheese) which give the drink a rich, savoury-sweet and unforgettable flavour.
The centre gives us a perfect balance for our stay, providing a welcoming and safe place to write together, talk about our creative journeys, and rest after our inspiring and amazing daily explorations of local chocolate makers, butterfly gardens, waterfall trails, and many more incredible places in this cloud forest haven.

I'm longing for the cloud forest!
Taste the Local Flavours
Meals with Chef Marina are part nourishment and part experience! A chef for more than three decades, she might serve velvety pumpkin soup or a traditional Ecuadorian locro, a delicious potato and cheese soup rooted in indigenous Quechua cuisine.
Enjoy fresh avocado on the side or a chunky wedge of sourdough bread made from a long-loved starter that’s been alive for years.
On our adventures, satisfy your hunger with a picnic lunch of tender chicken in a rich peanut sauce over rice, wrapped in a banana leaf. And yes, real cutlery is provided in the heart of the cloud forest!

Chef Marina sources seafood fresh from Ecuador’s coast like sea bass and Pacific shrimp, and plans delicious meals around local produce, fragrant herbs and fruits like guanábana, tree tomato, and naranjilla. Cooking for over a decade, and educated through advanced culinary studies in Quito, Marina also customizes her dishes according to the needs of those she welcomes around her table.
Savour homemade soups, torta de quinoa, llapingachos, quiche, and other mouth-watering meals while eating al fresco, conversation sparkling like the glint on the tumbling river…

Story-Inspiring Adventures
As artists, we need to feed our creative hunger and amaze and delight the inner child in all of us. On this trip, we will balance writing with daily feasts of Ecuadorian experiences!
Our South American adventure starts with an optional overnight in the fascinating city of Quito, founded in the 16th-century on top of an Incan city.
We will visit the Centro Histórico, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before our shuttle heads to Mindo (you can also opt for pickup from the airport).
Each day will feature a writing circle and group discussion in the morning which will be themed to match the day’s excursion.
You will also have plenty of free time to settle in to your writing by the river running through the retreat centre property, at one of the lovely local cafes, or to go exploring on your own or with writer friends.
All of our outings are included but if you want to stick close to home and write or do a mix of both, that is totally up to you! This is your retreat!

Here is a taste of some of the adventures we’ll enjoy:
Feel the cloud forest mist on your face as we take a cable car over the green canopy of the Rio Nambillo Valley on our way to the Sanctuary of Waterfalls, reachable via hiking trails through the forest.
Watch sparrow-sized blue morpho butterflies flit through a garden of lush tropical plants or welcome the watchful wing-eyes of an owl butterfly as it lands on you.
Hear the whir of hummingbird wings as they sip your offerings of sugar water and feel their tiny feet wrapped around your finger…
With about 32 species from the gorgeous purple and green Amethyst-throated Sunangel to the White-whiskered Hermit in this area, how many will you meet?
And what’s a writing retreat without chocolate?
During an artisinal factory tour, you’ll learn about the more than 5000-year history of using cocoa, then fill your senses with the smell of roasting beans and the delicious flavour of the best brownie you’ll ever have!

This looks amazing!!
After leading many retreats, I really appreciated being able to rest in Lauren and Anita’s competence! So many delightful, thoughtful details including terrific food, the appreciated gift bag, the lovely pink peony in my room, and help getting set up. Thanks so much for your efforts and care!
Your Retreat Guides

Lauren Carter
I’ve always been a writer. Since reciting my first original story — The Girl with the Green Hands — at the age of four, I’ve been driven by the impulse to express myself and reflect on the world through words. My mom took dictation that day, but once I learned to write, I never stopped.
The path, though, hasn’t always been straightforward. I’ve written openly on my blog about falling into depression, about languishing through difficult stretches, about the very real anxiety that can pull a writer away from the page, and about finding my way back through small acts of attention, hard-won self-knowledge, and the steadying practice of returning to the work. The mess, the chaos, the middle-of-the-night doubts: I know these territories intimately, and they’ve shaped me as much as any writing program.
Over the years, the impulse to explore the world has also taken me far from home, including to Ecuador for my first major solo trip in 2000. Since then, I’ve learned to tango in Buenos Aires, hiked through Hungary, and wandered through San Francisco, Argentina, and Israel. All of it has found its way onto the page, whether in travel articles for The Globe and Mail, National Geographic Traveler, and The Toronto Star, or folded into fiction. Those jaunts especially shaped Places Like These, my 2023 short story collection, where the places I’ve been live on in the characters who move through them.
I’m an award-winning author of six published books, and somewhere along the way it became clear that the things I love most — crafting story and going somewhere new — could become one thing. That’s how Wild Ground Writing Retreats was born in 2023.
As a certified Amherst Writers & Artists (AWA) facilitator and graduate of the University of Guelph’s MFA in Creative Writing program, I find deep meaning in supporting other writers. In planning retreats, I strive to create the conditions that help people more freely enter their writing and expand their understanding of themselves as writers while, at the same time, making new friends and experiencing amazing, inspiring places.
Anita Allen
Although neurotypical, I’m part of a vibrant neurodiverse family, a trait shared by at least one of the family pets. My writing explores the intersection of neurodiversity and mental health, intergenerational trauma, and breaking cycles. I’ve been offering writing workshops and retreats for the past six years, merging my passions for wellness and creativity. In 2023 I won second place in the Creative Non-Fiction Collective–Humber Literary Review Contest.
I’m a Physiotherapist, Certified Coach, Co-Founder of Ignite Your Write, an Amherst Writers & Artists (AWA) facilitator, and a graduate of The Humber School for Writers, The Sarah Selecky Writing School, and the Spark Your Story Intensive, where I received mentorship from award-winning Canadian authors Rowan McCandless and Nicole Breit.
I’ve been co-facilitating Still Water — Wild Ground’s lilac-scented, calming retreat at a Victorian cottage on Lake Simcoe — with Lauren for the past three years, and for the last two I’ve brought writers together for Writing on the Rocks, an intimate retreat in Ontario’s Muskokas, near Georgian Bay. Collaborating with Lauren has deepened my own understanding of what’s possible when writing, place, and community come together.
In my spare time, I do laundry, procrasti-knit, and enjoy doggy cuddles.
Alison Braun
I extend a warm invitation to host you in my second home—Mindo, Ecuador. This breathtakingly beautiful village, nestled in the cloud forests in a valley of the Andes, is famous for its stunning biodiversity, vibrant bird-life, butterflies, orchids, waterfalls, artisanal chocolate, adventure sports, and incredibly kindhearted locals.
Retreats here are a pleasure for all the senses. You’ll be in heaven eating the delicious meals carefully prepared by my comadre, Marina. Not only is she the best chef in the region, but she can work around any kind of food restrictions with ease.
As your host, it’s my joy and responsibility to care for each person with heartfelt attention. I’m deeply committed to creating a welcoming, accessible space for all. If you have any physical needs or accessibility considerations, my team and I will do everything we can to ensure your comfort and ease. You can relax and leave the logistics to us—we’ve got you!
Have Questions? We’ve Got Answers
What are the costs, payment schedule, and cancellation policy?
What does the retreat cost?
Our early bird rate gives you $500 off the cost of the retreat (prices go up November 16th)! The cost for this all-inclusive adventure range from $5597 to $6047 CAD, tax included, depending on room choices. (Please note: flights are not included).
What is the deposit and payment schedule?
A deposit of $600 CDN is required at the time of registration to hold your spot. Subsequent payments are scheduled for Oct, Nov, and Dec 13th in equal portions through the secure WeTravel booking platform. You can also pay in ‘drip payments’ – putting payments towards the balance at any time and in any amount.
The full balance is due 60 days before the retreat (by December 15, 2026).
What is the cancellation policy?
We understand that life happens. Here is our cancellation schedule:
• Cancellations made before November 15, 2026 (90+ days before departure): refund of full deposit and installment payments.
• Cancellations between November 16 and December 14, 2026: 50% of the total trip price is non-refundable.
• Cancellations after December 14, 2026 through to departure: 100% of the trip price is non-refundable, as costs will have been committed.
Wild Ground Writing Retreats reserves the right to cancel the retreat if a minimum number of participants is not reached, in which case all payments will be refunded in full. This is why we strongly recommend purchasing trip cancellation insurance as soon as you register — the sooner you do, the more protections you may be eligible for (see Travel Insurance below).
What are the details around travel, booking flights, and entry requirements?
Are flights included?
International flights are not included in the retreat price — this allows you to book flights with points, choose your preferred routing, and manage your own booking directly with your airline. We recommend booking through a travel agent rather than a third-party online platform, as agents can more easily assist with changes or cancellations if needed.
We’re happy to recommend travel agent Letizia Firman at Ventriesca Travel — she knows Ecuador well and is wonderful to work with.
When should I arrive?
Plan to arrive at Quito’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) on Friday, February 12, 2027. An overnight stay in Quito is included in your retreat package, and transfers from the airport (or from central Quito, whichever you prefer) are provided. We’ll meet you there!
Do I need a visa to enter Ecuador?
Canadian citizens do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days in Ecuador. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your expected departure date from Ecuador. You are responsible for ensuring your travel documents meet entry requirements — please verify current regulations before you travel.
What currency is used in Ecuador?
Ecuador uses the US dollar (USD). Credit cards are widely accepted at larger establishments, but smaller shops, cafés, and markets in Mindo village may be cash-only. It’s a good idea to arrive with some USD on hand. ATMs are available in Quito. We’ll share more practical money tips in our pre-departure information package.
What about travel insurance? Do I need it?
Is travel insurance required?
Yes — travel insurance is a condition of participation. We strongly encourage you to purchase a policy as soon as you register, because earlier purchase may qualify you for broader protections, including coverage for pre-existing medical conditions.
You may already have some coverage through your credit card, extended workplace benefits, or CAA membership — check these before purchasing a standalone policy. Whatever coverage you arrange, make sure it includes:
- Personal accident, death, and medical expenses
- Emergency repatriation (minimum $200,000 CAD recommended for each category)
- Trip cancellation and curtailment
- Loss of luggage and personal effects
When purchasing your policy, declare the full cost of the retreat, your flights, and any other prepaid travel expenses so you are fully protected. If using credit card insurance, you will need to provide proof that your trip was purchased on that card.
What about vaccinations, altitude sickness, and other health concerns?
Do I need any vaccinations?
We’re not medical professionals, so please consult your doctor or a travel health clinic — ideally 6 weeks before departure. For up-to-date recommendations specific to Ecuador, refer to:
- The Government of Canada’s Ecuador travel advice (Health section)
- The CDC’s Ecuador travel health page
As a general guide, all travellers should be up to date on routine vaccinations (MMR, tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis, polio, chickenpox, flu). Your travel health provider may also recommend Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and typhoid vaccines depending on your personal history and activities.
Note: Yellow fever vaccination is generally not recommended for travel to Mindo and the western Andean slopes. However, vaccination requirements can change, so please confirm with a travel health clinic and check whether any countries you transit through have their own yellow fever entry requirements.
What about altitude? Will I get altitude sickness?
Quito sits at approximately 2,850 metres (9,350 feet) above sea level, which is high enough that some travellers experience mild symptoms — headache, fatigue, or shortness of breath — in their first day or two. This is why we include an overnight in Quito at the start of the retreat: it gives your body time to adjust before we travel to Mindo.
The good news: our hotel in Quito’s front desk can provide traditional Ecuadorian natural remedies — a time-honoured local approach to easing altitude adjustment. And once we board the shuttle to Mindo, we actually descend in elevation (Mindo is at approximately 1,250 metres / 4,100 feet), so most people feel noticeably better once we arrive.
If you have concerns about altitude sensitivity, speak with your doctor before the trip. Some travellers choose to discuss preventive medication options with their physician in advance.
Are there medical facilities nearby?
Mindo village has basic medical services. More comprehensive care is available in Quito, approximately 1.5–2 hours away. This is another reason travel insurance with emergency evacuation coverage is essential. Our bilingual retreat host Alison and her team are experienced in the area and will always know how to connect you with the right help if needed.
What about food safety and water?
All meals at the retreat centre are prepared by Chef Marina using fresh local ingredients — she has been cooking for international guests for over a decade and is experienced at accommodating dietary restrictions. We recommend following standard travel food precautions when eating or drinking outside the retreat centre (stick to bottled or filtered water, avoid raw street food if you have a sensitive stomach). Your pre-departure package will include more detailed guidance.
Do I need health insurance?
Is it safe to go to Ecuador right now?
This is a completely understandable question, and we want to address it honestly. The Government of Canada currently advises travellers to “exercise a high degree of caution” in Ecuador due to crime levels, particularly in certain urban areas and border regions. The areas of greatest concern are coastal provinces and areas near the Colombian and Peruvian borders — places our retreat does not visit.
Mindo is a small ecotourism village in the Andean cloud forest, known internationally as a destination for birdwatchers, naturalists, and travellers seeking exactly the kind of peaceful, nature-immersed experience we offer. It has a very different character from Ecuador’s larger cities.
Our retreat host, Alison Braun, is Canadian and has been living between Mindo and Ottawa for over 30 years. In all that time, she has never encountered a safety incident at the retreat centre or in the village. Her deep local knowledge, long-standing community relationships, and experienced team are a significant part of what makes this retreat feel safe and well-held.
We also take practical precautions: transfers are arranged by us, excursions are guided, and you’ll never be navigating an unfamiliar place alone. As with any travel — including in Canada’s larger cities — common-sense awareness (keeping valuables secure, avoiding isolated areas after dark) goes a long way.
We will be hosting a live webinar in September 2026 where you can ask Alison and Lauren your safety questions directly. We hope this will give you the confidence and context you need. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
What are the writing sessions like? Are they suitable for a beginner or someone working on a dedicated project?
What is the structure of the writing programming?
Each day of the retreat follows a bird-inspired theme — fitting, given that Mindo is home to more than 450 species! The theme anchors a morning discussion and writing circle that flows naturally from the day’s excursion, so that what you experience in the cloud forest feeds directly into what you write on the page.
Writing circles are generative and low-pressure: you write in response to prompts and are invited (never required) to share. There are no critiques. The AWA (Amherst Writers & Artists) method, which both Lauren and Anita are certified to facilitate, is built on the belief that everyone has a strong, authentic voice — and that the facilitator’s job is to create the conditions for that voice to emerge.
Do I need to be an experienced writer to attend?
Not at all. This retreat welcomes writers at every stage — from those returning to the page after a long absence, to those with published work who are craving renewed creative energy. What unites participants is a love of words and a willingness to explore. The AWA method is particularly well-suited to mixed groups because it works with whatever you bring, without judgment.
Can I work on a larger project — a novel, memoir, or collection?
The daily writing circles are generative and open-ended, designed to fill your well and unlock new material, and of course group activities are always optional. You will also have plenty of time to settle into a corner of the retreat centre or a local cafe to attend to your project. In addition, if you’re working on a novel and would like dedicated time to discuss it, Lauren offers individual one-on-one consultations at an additional cost. Space for these sessions is limited, so if you’re interested, please secured it as an add-on when you register.
What writing experience do Lauren and Anita bring?
Both Lauren Carter and Anita Allen are certified Amherst Writers & Artists (AWA) facilitators and have been co-leading retreats together for several years, including the Still Water retreat on Lake Simcoe and Writing on the Rocks in Ontario’s Muskokas. Lauren is an award-winning author of six books with an MFA from the University of Guelph and extensive experience as a teacher of writer. Anita is a physiotherapist, certified coach, and writing teacher with a background at the Humber School for Writers and the Sarah Selecky Writing School. Together, they bring a depth of care, craft, and logistical ease that past participants have described as rare.
What does a typical day (or the whole nine days) look like?
Each day follows a gentle, predictable rhythm so you can settle into your creative flow without worrying about logistics: mornings begin with breakfast and a writing talk or circle built around that day’s theme, followed by a guided excursion into the cloud forest. Expect moments like a welcome cacao ceremony on arrival night, mornings among butterflies and hummingbirds, a waterfall hike (with a swim, if you’re up for it), a hands-on empanada-making class, and even the option to encounter the sounds and sensations of the jungle at night. Afternoons bring a second writing circle and plenty of unstructured free time, and evenings wind down over dinner and an optional sharing circle where you can read aloud — or simply listen — among fellow writers.
Writing prompts and daily discussions will follow our daily themes, from Gathering and Building Your Nest at the start, through New Growth and Entering the Wilds mid-retreat, to Spreading Your Wings and, finally, Flying Free when we’ll close with a celebratory departure party featuring participant readings. A detailed itinerary will be sent to registrants once all excursions and activities are finalized, but this gives you a sense of the shape and pacing of your time with us.
Can you provide more details about the retreat centre and accommodations for special diets?
What are the accommodations like?
The Refugio del Río Retreat Centre is a wilderness lodge-style property set in its own private nature reserve along the Canchupi River in Mindo. Wooden buildings with local cultural touches — Ecuadorian tapestries, large windows looking into the cloud forest — make for warm, atmospheric rooms. All accommodations, both single and shared, have ensuite bathrooms with showers. There are hammocks, river-view tables, and balcony writing spots throughout the property. It feels like a treehouse in the best possible way.
There are also two resident dogs who are love-bunnies and very popular with animal-loving guests.
Can my dietary needs be accommodated?
Yes! Chef Marina has more than a decade of experience cooking for international guests and is skilled at adapting menus to a wide range of dietary needs — vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, allergies, and more. Please note any dietary requirements on your registration form so we can communicate them to Marina in advance.
Is this trip accessible for people with physical disabilities?
Mindo is a cloud forest village, and most of our excursions involve some walking on uneven, hilly, or occasionally muddy terrain — including steps down to the waterfalls, a walk up a hill to the chocolate factory, and forest trails for the night hike and magnolia planting site. None of our standard excursions are wheelchair accessible as currently structured.
That said, accessibility isn’t all-or-nothing. Our retreat centre itself is relatively easy to navigate, and many excursions have less demanding vantage points or shorter options even where the full trail isn’t accessible. If you have a physical disability, mobility limitation, or other accessibility need, please reach out to us before registering — our host Alison knows this terrain intimately and can talk through what’s realistically possible for you, what might need modification, and what won’t work, so you can make an informed decision rather than a hopeful guess.
What if I have more questions or would like to speak with someone?
We are happy to talk with you! You can text/phone/WhatApp Lauren at 1-204-978-0272 or email her at lauren@wildgroundwriting.com.
You can also contact Alison Braun directly with any questions about the Mindo retreat centre and Ecuador. Contact her by text/phone/WhatApp at 1-613-203-3291 or by email at alison@earthtreks.com
Lauren, Alison, and Anita will also be hosting a ZOOM Q-and-A call on Sunday, September 13th at 4 pm ET / 3 pm Central. Lauren will share the registration link on social media and through the email list once it is set up!
